"Central Asia + United States" Summit: Kazakh Railway Delegation Visits the U.S. to Examine Digital Practices of Leading Freight Companies

Kazakhstan International News Agency - During a working visit to the United States, Talgat Aldabergerov, Chairman of the Board of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), led a delegation to Norfolk Southern Corporation, one of the largest railway freight companies in the United States, to conduct an on-site inspection of its core infrastructure and engage in practical dialogue with senior officials.

According to the news center of the National Railway Company, the delegation visited the central dispatch control center of Norfolk Southern, learning about real-time monitoring and intelligent scheduling systems for train operations; they then went to the Inman Yard marshaling yard in Atlanta, observing the world-leading train disassembly and assembly processes; and at the Austell intermodal terminal, they experienced the efficient loading and unloading of containers and the seamless integration of different transportation modes. The two sides focused on exchanging advanced experiences in areas such as digital transportation management, intelligent train scheduling systems, logistics chain efficiency improvement, and modernization of railway infrastructure.

During the visit, the Kazakh delegation also visited the headquarters of Wabtec, a major American railway equipment company. The talks focused on updating locomotive fleets, introducing safety innovation systems, and cooperation on digital motion control platforms. Both sides reached preliminary consensus on technology transfer and joint research and development.

Norfolk Southern was established in 1827 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a key freight operator connecting the eastern coast of the United States with the western trunk line. Its railway network spans 22 states, covering more than 31,000 kilometers, managing 44 intermodal terminals and 782 industrial parks along the route, and collaborating deeply with over 50 port logistics partners. The company's rolling stock assets include over 160,000 freight cars (owned, leased, and private), serving industries such as agriculture, energy, containers, and automotive transportation. Norfolk Southern supports over 260 partner logistics routes and is the core operator for freight corridors between major economic hubs in the United States, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Miami.

The Kazakh railway's visit aims to learn from the mature practices of American counterparts in digital transformation and intermodal transport, to enhance freight efficiency along the "Belt and Road" initiative and build a Central Asia-North America logistics corridor. Industry insiders believe that such high-level exchanges will open up new spaces for technological cooperation and joint investment between the two countries' railway companies.
