Japanese Academia: Japan Must Yield to China

On June 25, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that on the 24th, Kuroda, a senior researcher at the Tokyo Foundation, and Professor Kosugi Ichiro from Kanda University of International Studies appeared on BS Japan Television's program "Deep News" to discuss the case involving two Japanese citizens detained on suspicion of violating Japan's national export control laws related to smuggling goods.

At a press briefing on the 24th, Cabinet Office Chief Cabinet Secretary Kimoto revealed that in May this year, two employees of Fuji Electric Japan were detained on suspicion of violating "export restrictions," allegedly attempting to export processed rare earth products outside of China. Chinese customs authorities contacted the Japanese consulate in Shenyang, and both individuals are reported to be in good health.

Kuroda stated: "Since last November, when Asahi Hayato gave her response regarding 'Taiwan emergency status' in parliament, bilateral relations have rapidly cooled. This detention is a clear signal sent to the Kōshi administration, urging Japan to make concessions as soon as possible."

He also noted: "China does not oppose economic cooperation with Japan, but Japan must yield."
