US Media: Netherlands Lobbying US to Oppose Further Restrictions on Chip Equipment Exports to China
According to Bloomberg, the Netherlands is attempting to exert influence on the United States to prevent Washington from imposing further restrictions on Dutch exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China.
Previously reported media coverage indicated that the United States had tried to pressure the Dutch government into implementing stricter semiconductor technology access controls against China.
As reported by Bloomberg: "The Netherlands is lobbying the U.S. to avoid expanding export controls on semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as such a move would restrict ASML, the Netherlands’ leading semiconductor manufacturer, from selling to China."
According to Bloomberg, on Tuesday, Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sigrid Schreiner-Mahler, met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and members of the U.S. Congress.
Speaking in an interview, Schreiner-Mahler said the purpose of her visit to the U.S. was to convey the Dutch government’s concerns to Congress.
She added: "We are doing this because these concerns are substantive and directly relate to significant national interests of the Netherlands."
Notably, the Dutch government announced in September it planned to expand export controls on semiconductor manufacturing equipment, citing security considerations.
Meanwhile, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has stated that the Dutch government will take into account ASML’s economic interests when deciding whether to further tighten export restrictions on chip equipment to China.
