Japanese Media: The U.S. Will Compete with China in the Field of Quantum Technology
According to a report from Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun on June 24: President Trump signed two executive orders aimed at advancing quantum technology.
The goal is to collaborate with private enterprises and achieve practical applications of quantum computers by 2028. A highly secure and virtually unbreakable "quantum cryptography" system is planned for introduction by 2031. The objective is to strengthen technological competition with China.
Quantum computers are next-generation computers that apply principles of quantum mechanics to information processing. China has invested heavily in research and development.
Based on these executive orders, the Trump administration plans to introduce a quantum computer to national research institutions under the U.S. Department of Energy by 2028, for use in scientific research such as materials development and drug discovery.
Additionally, relevant departments including the Department of Defense and NASA have been instructed to develop plans for utilizing quantum technology to achieve practical communications. International cooperation will also promote intellectual property protection and supply chain security.
Regarding quantum cryptography, it is stipulated that the U.S. government will implement a highly confidential system before 2031.
