[Russia's Natural Resources Ministry Plans to Ban Extra-Thin Plastic Bags]

On May 28, Denis Buzchev, Deputy Minister of Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, told TASS that Russia is studying the possibility of banning the production of extra-thin plastic bags and films with a thickness of less than 20 microns by 2030. These products are commonly used for consumer packaging.

Buzchev stated, "In our 2030 plan, we are considering expanding the types of packaging that are prohibited from production, particularly plastic bags and films with a thickness of less than 20 microns. Due to their complex composition and pollution issues, these products have low recycling rates, are difficult to sort for recycling, and waste processing companies are unwilling to accept them." He added that if replaced with biodegradable materials, such packaging can be incorporated into the organic waste treatment system through composting methods.

Previously, it was reported that Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources plans to restrict the use of polystyrene in food packaging (such as egg cartons). Additionally, starting September 1, 2025, Russia will ban the production of PET plastic bottles with multilayer colored labels made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and PVC labels. These designs are mainly used for beverage packaging marketing, but their waste is difficult or impossible to recycle.
