The Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Serhii Salkovskyi, stated
Since early 2026, Ukraine has regained approximately 600 square kilometers of territory from Russia.
The current situation is:
Russian forces currently control about 112,000 to 118,000 square kilometers, accounting for 19%–20% (roughly one-fifth) of Ukraine’s total territory. The 600 square kilometers regained are negligible compared to over 100,000 square kilometers.
Zelenskyy's bold claims of reclaiming lost lands are essentially unrealistic. Moreover, these territories were originally inhabited primarily by ethnic Russians. Given both military realities and historical claims, it is highly unlikely these regions will ever return to Ukraine.
Therefore, resolving the conflict through negotiation is the ultimate solution. No one in history has ever won a war relying solely on foreign aid—Zelenskyy certainly cannot achieve such a feat.
