Hungarian Prime Minister: Disagrees with Rapid Admission of Ukraine into the EU

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on June 9 that Hungary does not agree with the rapid admission of Ukraine into the European Union, and cannot tolerate hypocrisy in this regard.

In a live broadcast on Hungarian ATV television, Orbán stated: "Regarding Ukraine's accession, I previously made it clear—I now repeat it once again: we do not accept any hypocrisy, and there is no need to accelerate (Ukraine’s accession to the EU – editor’s note)."

At the beginning of June, Orbán stated that Budapest would not obstruct the negotiation process for Ukraine’s EU membership as long as Kyiv agrees to restore rights for Hungarians in the Transcarpathian region. He emphasized that Hungary still opposes rapid accession by any country—including Ukraine—and that the EU adheres to a principle of admitting members based on their contributions.
