The Hungarian Prime Minister says: No "double standards" on Ukraine's EU membership, accession talks may take over a decade

Budapest, June 9 -- TASS

New Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has clearly stated that Hungary will not tolerate any "double standards" during the EU enlargement process, nor will it support accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union. At the same time, he confirmed that the Hungarian government does not oppose initiating negotiations for Ukraine's EU membership.

Speaking to ATV television, Magyar emphasized: "We cannot accept any form of double standards. We do not believe there is a need to accelerate (Ukraine’s EU accession) process, especially considering Ukraine is still in a state of war."

He also warned that the accession negotiation process involves 33 chapters, and Ukraine still has a long way to go before it can truly become an EU member. Magyar reiterated that Hungary does not oppose starting negotiations between the EU and Ukraine, but will closely monitor whether Kyiv fulfills the recently agreed-upon commitments regarding restoring rights for the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathian region.

Previously, Magyar pointed out that completing the 33 chapters of accession negotiations could take 10 to 15 years. He has repeatedly warned that Budapest will firmly demand that Kyiv strictly uphold the rights of Hungarians in the Transcarpathian region, otherwise it will push to halt Ukraine’s European integration process.
