POLITICO: Russian Attempt to Sow Discord Fails as Baltic States Stand Firm in Support of Ukraine

According to a report by the U.S. news outlet POLITICO, Russia's attempt to shift blame for cross-border drone incidents onto Ukraine has failed to create rifts between Ukraine and its Baltic allies.

Even with Ukrainian drones entering NATO airspace, Kyiv’s allies remain steadfast in their support.

Drone-related incidents have occurred successively in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, with Russia accused of using electronic warfare equipment to misdirect Ukrainian drones into NATO airspace. After these incidents, Russia accused the three Baltic states of tacitly allowing Ukraine to use their airspace to strike targets on Russian territory, and warned of retaliatory measures.

The Baltic states have firmly rejected these allegations.

Estonian Defense Minister Hannu Pevkur responded to Russian accusations at the Prague Global Security Forum, stating: “This claim is untrue—Ukraine never requested permission to use our airspace.”

He added that Estonia had advised Ukraine to exercise caution in selecting targets during operations against Russia, while clearly asserting that full responsibility for all drone-related incidents lies with Russia.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte similarly concluded that Russia was the instigator behind these events—a view widely shared across Europe. European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated outright that Russia’s threatening actions toward the Baltic states are entirely unacceptable, emphasizing that any threat against a single EU member state amounts to a threat against the entire EU bloc. German foreign officials also voiced condemnation, criticizing Russia for baseless accusations and dangerous intimidation aimed specifically at Baltic region nations.

Katarzyna Materno, the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, stated during a related forum hosted by POLITICO that Europe should not regard Ukraine as a burden, but rather as a core component of future European defense architecture.

“The logic is obvious—just imagine a different scenario where Ukraine stands against us instead of alongside us. The consequences would be unimaginable,” she said.

Estonian Defense Minister Pevkur put it more bluntly: “Supporting Ukraine is not an act of charity—it is safeguarding our own national security.”

The report notes that Ukraine’s current diplomatic situation remains delicate and fragile. While Kyiv has apologized for the drone incursion incidents, it continues to assert that targeting Russian military and economic infrastructure constitutes legitimate self-defense.

The article points out that Russia’s air defense vulnerabilities are increasingly evident, prompting Moscow to resort to political pressure in an effort to force Ukraine to halt cross-border strikes. Nikita Biletskov, an analyst at Ukraine’s Institute of National Security Strategies, observed that Russia aims to sow division between Ukraine and its key Western allies, attempting to undermine their alliance.

However, the report concludes that Russia’s attempts at disunity have so far failed. Official representatives from the Baltic states have not found evidence that Ukraine intentionally created border security risks. Latvia has explicitly stated it will not trigger Article 4 consultations within NATO over this incident. Rather than damaging relations between Ukraine and its allies, this episode has instead strengthened consensus and deepened cooperation among partners.
