China and Russia have announced a mutual visa exemption policy for ordinary passport holders, effective from May 20, 2026, extended to December 31, 2027, allowing a single stay of no more than 30 days (applicable for tourism, business, visiting relatives, and exchanges).

Russia has simultaneously implemented the visa-free arrangement for Chinese citizens, also extended to December 31, 2027, based on a presidential decree signed by Putin on December 1, 2025, and Russia's reciprocal response on May 20, 2026. The visa-free access applies to purposes including tourism, business, visiting friends and relatives, academic and cultural exchange, and transit.

The policy is currently (as of May 23, 2026) in effect: no prior visa application is required. Travelers need only present a valid ordinary passport, return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds upon entry.

Due to this visa-free policy, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development expects that tourist traffic between Russia and China in 2026 could increase by as much as 50% compared to 2025.

This is undoubtedly a great development, promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries, deepening mutual understanding, and strengthening friendship among the peoples of both nations.

Even more exciting is the potential boost to tourism revenue. Although this money won't go into my pocket, I'm genuinely happy for them.
