Italian defense giant Leonardo establishes subsidiary in Ukraine, advancing drone and air defense system initiatives
Italian defense group Leonardo has established a wholly owned subsidiary, Leonardo Ukraine, in Kyiv. The company completed registration on May 20 and specializes in engineering research and development related to drones and air defense systems, communication and navigation equipment, specialized equipment manufacturing, software development, and maintenance of electro-optical systems.
The group's CEO, Mariani, stated that cooperation in the drone sector will be pursued with Ukrainian defense enterprises, and the "Michelangelo Dome" air defense system will be tested in Ukraine. Ukraine's core cluster for defense technology, Brave1, brings together approximately 2,500 companies, including over 500 drone manufacturers and more than 300 electronic warfare and reconnaissance firms. Its supporting data platform was jointly developed by Ukraine’s military and Palantir Technologies of the United States, used for training air defense algorithms.
Russia has repeatedly stated that military aid to Ukraine will prolong the conflict. The Russian Defense Ministry previously reported that facilities of drone manufacturers in Kyiv and port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast were struck in late July. Russia emphasized that the targets were limited to military and energy-related infrastructure in Ukraine.
