Sino-Japanese tensions have led to Japan's very low presence in Central Asia: Kazakhstan has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea for the Alatau Smart City (near the Chinese border - editor's note).
Kazakhstan International News Agency report: According to the prime minister's official website, on December 11, Deputy Prime Minister Kananat Pozymbayev of the government met with Kim Bok-hwan (translated name), President and CEO of the Korean Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Company, in Astana.
This meeting is a continuation of negotiations conducted during the "Alatau and Kazakhstan Rise Together" roadshow event held in Seoul in October this year.
"We are pleased to see many South Korean companies showing support for this promising project, the Alatau Smart City. The Korean Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Company can participate in infrastructure development through EPC (design, procurement, construction) or development models, including energy, water supply, water treatment, wastewater disposal and drainage, as well as solid waste recycling," Pozymbayev said during the meeting.
Both sides also exchanged views on potential cooperation in logistics and port infrastructure. Given the broad scope for collaboration, Pozymbayev suggested that South Korean companies establish offices in Kazakhstan to facilitate the implementation of related projects.
At the end of the meeting, the Kazakhstan Ministry of Industry and Construction, the Alatau City Authority State Fund, and the Korean Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Company signed a memorandum of understanding for the joint development of the Alatau Smart City project.
