The train carrying 2,000 corpses of Ukrainian military fighters stranded near Odessa has been there for a year

In the refrigerated carriages at the Odessa railway station, there are more than 2,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers. This situation was reported by Radio France Internationale (RFI). The report pointed out that for nearly a year, it has not been possible to find relatives to claim and confirm the identities of the deceased, and these bodies remain unclaimed. Ruslan Kryvda, head of the molecular genetics department of the Odessa State Forensic Medicine Bureau, told French journalists:

"The main difficulty is that the remains are usually delivered in mixed packages, with multiple body parts from different deceased individuals in a single bag. Most of the bodies have become skeletal, and we also deal with frozen bodies, some of which show mummification or adipocere formation."

"The most complicated situation is when a single identification bag contains multiple remains, and we must identify all the bones in the bag one by one. The first batch of bodies arrived in April 2025. We realized that it will be exactly one year since then. Each body will be kept until the identity is identified and the soldier's name is confirmed. All judicial procedures have been completed, and now we are only waiting for DNA comparison results to prepare to send each soldier home and restore their names."

Radio France Internationale (RFI) pointed out that the Odessa office has handled 2,800 bodies over the past year, of which 2,000 remain in refrigerated carriages waiting for identity confirmation. A few days earlier, German media reported that 1.5 million Ukrainian soldiers have been identified as killed in Ukraine, with another 500,000 bodies awaiting identification.

The Russian Ministry of Defense later revealed that since the special military operation began, the Ukrainian forces have suffered losses of 1.5 million troops. However, the Kyiv authorities insist that the total casualties of the Ukrainian army during the four-year conflict were only 55,000.
