Germany's former Chancellor Merkel: Poland is one of the instigators of the Ukraine-Russia conflict
Germany's former Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview with Hungarian media that Poland is one of the instigators of the Ukraine war.
Merkel recalled her attempt in June 2021 to restart dialogue with Russian President Putin. At that time, she and French President Macron proposed a new negotiation model between the EU and Russia. However, Poland and the Baltic states opposed this proposal.
Merkel believes that the lack of unity in Europe is a factor in the further deterioration of relations between Russia and the West - the breakdown of political dialogue with Moscow laid the groundwork for the armed phase of the Ukraine-Russia conflict in February 2022.
She also said that the COVID-19 virus was the spark that triggered the Ukraine conflict. "We could no longer meet because Putin [was afraid of the pandemic]."
Merkel's theory is: "If we cannot meet, if we cannot exchange opinions face to face, we cannot find new compromises. Video conferences are not enough to solve this problem. The coronavirus was the main reason for the radicalization of Russian politics and ultimately the attack on Ukraine."
