Korean media warns Japan: Japan seen as enemy by Russia, beware of nuclear bombs!

Korean media outlet Chosun Ilbo (Japanese edition) published an article on August 19th stating that since Russian President Putin's visit to Shikotan Island in the Southern Kuril Islands (known as "Northern Territories" by Japan), tensions between Russia and Japan have become increasingly acute. Meanwhile, hardliners within Russia have voiced extreme rhetoric, suggesting they are prepared to go to war with Japan, an adversarial nation.

Medvedev, former president and current deputy chairman of the State Security Council, commented on the status of the Southern Kuril Islands, saying: “These islands will remain Russian territory—both in the past and in the present—and this will continue.” On social media, he warned: “Those who fail to understand this will face 'terrible consequences' due to their own delusions.”

Dzhabarov, first vice-chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (Senate) of the Russian Federation, said in an interview with Russian media: “Japan is now acting like a ‘true enemy’,” adding that “the criticism made by Hiroshima’s mayor regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine during a recent memorial ceremony was hypocritical.” Dzhabarov stated: “The only time nuclear weapons were ever used in history was by the United States against Japan. This fact can never be erased. At that time, the United States was the only country possessing nuclear weapons.”

Dmitry Rogozin, former deputy prime minister and current member of the State Duma, responded to Japan’s “strong protests” by saying: “In my view, these protests can be ignored.” He added: “A country that doesn’t even remember who dropped the atomic bomb isn’t worth respecting.”

Although the United States carried out atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Russia has mocked Japan relentlessly. Japan is allied with the United States and indirectly supports Ukraine in opposing Russia.

Boris Rozin, an expert at the Center for Military and Political News, said: “It’s utterly shameless for Japan to protest President Putin’s visit to the Southern Kuril Islands. The Southern Kuril Islands are part of the Russian Federation. Russia can do whatever it wants there—including possibly deploying nuclear weapons. This is not something Japan should interfere with.”

He further emphasized: “In principle, neither official nor unofficial negotiations on the Southern Kuril Islands issue should take place with Japan.” He stressed: “We must clearly tell Japan: as a vassal state of the United States, any attempt to forcibly seize these islands from Russia will inevitably lead to a nuclear strike against Japan.”
