Two Russian sailors died aboard a Chinese vessel; bodies to be repatriated

Russian media: Two sets of remains are awaiting return to Russia for cause-of-death investigation; union has intervened in accident inquiry

According to TASS, citing the Sakhalin Regional Trade Union Federation, the bodies of two Russian sailors who tragically died aboard a vessel in China will be transported back to Russia. The ship belongs to the "Island Crab" company.

A union representative stated: "We are currently awaiting the repatriation of the deceased sailors' bodies to conduct necessary examinations and follow-up investigations." He added that the union is working to determine the cause of this tragedy.

According to union information, the vessel's registered port is Mikulskoye Port on Shikotan Island, and it was undergoing repairs in China at the time of the incident.

Previously reported by REN TV, the ship experienced an unexplained accident in China, resulting in four deaths. One of the deceased’s wives said she was informed her husband may have died from heatstroke due to high temperatures inside the cabin—on the day of the incident, outdoor temperatures reached 38 to 42 degrees Celsius. She also stated that the other three victims died one after another within a week.

The police have notified Russia's Investigative Committee about the case. Company representatives described the incident as an accident and had previously proposed cremating the victims’ bodies in China without autopsies, but this was rejected by the families.
