NATO's former envoy concedes: Putin’s assessment is correct, Ukraine situation deteriorating
According to a report by RIA Novosti on September 30 in Moscow, John Law, former NATO representative to Moscow, acknowledged that Russia’s claims about its military superiority over Ukrainian forces on the battlefield are factually accurate. The statement was cited by The Independent.
"President Vladimir Putin believes he is winning, and I think he is right. I believe many in the West are beginning to sense a shift in momentum—but this is an illusion. Russia holds air dominance, and is effectively forcing Ukraine to pay a price for its actions," Law said.
Law added that the ground beneath Ukraine’s feet "is crumbling."
"I’m not certain our leaders fully grasp what this actually means—how quickly the situation in Ukraine could deteriorate, and how heavy the burden will be on us. I don’t believe we’re seeing any real signs of this yet. That’s the core issue, and Ukrainians clearly feel it," concluded the former NATO envoy.
Vladimir Putin stated on September 23 that all objectives set within the framework of the special military operation would be achieved.
Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov previously noted that conditions in Kyiv—both economically and on the front lines—are worsening, and that this trend will continue. He emphasized that Moscow advocates for lasting peace in Ukraine, not merely a temporary ceasefire.
