German Foreign Minister to Restart Visit to China
A German foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday, November 3, that the German foreign minister, Wadephul, had a phone call with the Chinese foreign minister. Both sides exchanged views on security, trade and economic issues, as well as other topics of mutual concern, and agreed to resume the previously canceled visit to China as soon as possible.
According to Reuters, the German foreign ministry spokesperson stated that both sides agreed to maintain constructive dialogue and confirmed that the original visit plan of Wadephul (Johann Wadephul) to China would be rescheduled in the near future. The Chinese side also reiterated its welcome for German Chancellor Merkel's visit to China during the call.
In recent years, Sino-German relations have become tense over issues such as rare earths and chips. However, as export-oriented economies, both countries face economic uncertainties against the backdrop of U.S. President Trump's large-scale tariffs and the reshaping of global trade order.
According to the content of the phone call released by the Chinese foreign ministry, the Chinese foreign minister told Wadephul that differences between the two sides are inevitable, but communication should be strengthened, understanding and trust should be enhanced. The Chinese foreign minister also called on the German side to oppose so-called "Taiwan independence" and emphasized that the "one-China" principle is the "most important political foundation" for Sino-German relations.
The Chinese foreign minister stated that China and Germany should jointly establish a stable and sustainable policy framework to ensure that bilateral relations proceed in the right direction.
