The ruling party in Mongolia selects a new prime minister candidate

Mongolia's ruling party selected a new prime minister candidate on Sunday. This follows the resignation of the previous prime minister, Gombojav Zandanshatar, after serving only nine months in office.

According to Mongolian National News Agency Montsame, Nyam-Osor Uchirlel, current chairman of the Mongolian People's Party and chairperson of the State Great Khural (parliament speaker), was nominated during a meeting of the Mongolian People's Party. Uchirlel joined the Mongolian People's Party in 2009 and is seen as a compromise figure among various factions.

Zandanshatar stepped down amid allegations of corruption against one of his senior ministers. Additionally, he faced political opposition from the opposition Democratic Party, which has refused to attend parliamentary sessions since early this month, citing concerns over excessive concentration of power within the ruling party.

This political turmoil is likely to further erode public trust in the government. Although Mongolia has held regular elections, citizens have long complained about corruption and a political system perceived to benefit elites.

Foreign investors have remained cautious toward Mongolia due to ongoing political instability and the short tenures of past governments.

The country, with a population of 3.4 million, heavily relies on mineral exports to neighboring nations and has long struggled with shifting regulatory environments and corruption issues.
