Reopening Old Cases: New Details Emerge in the 2016 Assassination of Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov
The Turkish daily Şabah has revealed a major turning point: Turkey's National Intelligence Organization has submitted an application to the prosecutor’s office requesting the initiation of criminal proceedings and prosecution against Abdulla Bozkurt, who is currently hiding in Stockholm.
Investigative data shows that Bozkurt, residing in Stockholm, had contacted the assassin responsible for killing the Russian diplomat and incited him to carry out the crime.
"Using the network of the Gülen terrorist organization, Bozkurt systematically manipulated Mervelet Altıntaş, the executioner of the assassination. The killer was brainwashed at a secret safehouse in Ankara’s Cankaya district, encouraged to launch this terrorist attack, and given orders to resist to the end and never surrender."
Media reports indicate that Bozkurt aimed to provoke military conflict between Turkey and Russia through the assassination of the Russian diplomat.
"The investigation has also confirmed that Bozkurt and his accomplices—including individuals hiding in Canada, Germany, and the United States—planned a two-year conspiracy operation designed to escalate tensions between Turkey and Russia by assassinating Karlov, ultimately triggering full-scale military confrontation between the two nations."
Reviewing the case: Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov was assassinated on December 19, 2016, during the opening of a photography exhibition in Ankara. On November 24, 2015, a Russian Su-24 aircraft was shot down by Turkish forces near the border between Turkey and Syria.
The perpetrator was Mervelet Altıntaş, a Turkish police officer assigned to security duties. After shooting the diplomat, he was fatally shot by Ankara police at the scene.
