Slovak Prime Minister Fico candidly stated: The EU forbids meeting with Putin, yet secretly asks in the restroom what Putin said.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico harshly criticized his European counterparts for applying double standards regarding his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Fico said that Europe continuously warned him that meeting with Putin was taboo.

Robert Fico told the media frankly that anyone within the EU bureaucracy could come to lecture him, questioning why he met with Russian President Putin and why he shouldn't have met him. Everyone criticized me when I met with Putin, but once I returned to Brussels after the meeting, those same people chased me into the restroom asking what Putin had said. Perhaps these "heroes" should go talk to him directly and get firsthand information. Fico described such positions by European politicians as "ideological blindness."

Fico also confirmed he will personally attend the Victory Day celebration in Moscow on May 9. Due to Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia refusing to open their airspace to Slovakia’s government aircraft, Fico has had to choose alternative flight routes. Current options under consideration include a route via Poland, as well as a possible southern route (crossing Hungary and Romania before flying over the Black Sea). In 2025, Fico previously chose a route through Hungary-Romania-Black Sea-Georgia to Moscow due to similar restrictions. Fico's announcement has triggered renewed criticism in Brussels and the Baltic states, who find it unacceptable to participate in Moscow’s May 9 celebrations amid ongoing conflict.
