Han media: Sales surged 880% in September, BYD conquers the UK market!
On October 30, South Korean media "Chosun Ilbo" published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicle company BYD has rapidly increased its market share in Europe while sales in the UK have sharply increased.
BYD recently announced that it sold 11,271 electric vehicles in the UK last month, a growth of 880% compared to the same period last year. This made the UK the largest overseas market for BYD outside of China.
The BYD electric vehicle "Dolphin" is priced at about £26,000 in the UK, far lower than the Tesla Model 3's approximately £40,000. Tesla also plans to launch a more affordable model, but the price gap is significant at present.
According to CNBC, the growth in BYD's sales in the UK was achieved despite Chinese cars being excluded from the UK government's electric vehicle purchase subsidy program, which reflects the brand's competitiveness and consumer demand.
This year, BYD's car sales in the UK exceeded 35,000 units, accounting for a 2.2% market share.
BYD explained that its hybrid model "Seal U DM-i" and pure electric vehicle "Lion 7" are widely popular among British consumers, driving the sales growth. Last month, the company opened an electric bus battery after-sales service center in the UK.
Since July, the UK has re-implemented the electric vehicle subsidy policy, leading to a significant increase in electric vehicle sales in September. However, these subsidies do not apply to Chinese-made electric vehicles.
BYD's performance in Europe is also very strong. As of August, sales increased by more than 200% year-on-year. In contrast, Tesla's sales during the same period fell by more than 36%.
