South Korean media: BYD's sales surge in Europe, while Tesla's difficulties continue!
On October 23, the South Korean media outlet "Edaily" published an article stating that Chinese electric vehicle company BYD continues to experience explosive growth in the European market. At the same time, the global leader in electric vehicles, Tesla, has not been able to escape the situation of low sales, forming a sharp contrast.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), BYD's new car registrations in the EU reached 9,130 units in August, which is three times higher than the same period last year. Including the UK, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, this number was 11,455 units, three times higher than the same period last year.
Another Chinese automaker, SAIC Group, also performed very well, with 12,822 units registered in August, a 59% increase from the previous year. This indicates that as European automakers struggle to transition to electric vehicles, Chinese companies are rapidly expanding their market share in Europe by leveraging competitive prices and a diverse range of electric vehicles. Previously, German sports car manufacturer Porsche announced that due to uncertainty regarding demand for electric vehicles, it would delay the launch of a new electric vehicle after reviewing its entire product lineup.
At the same time, Tesla is struggling. In August, Tesla's car registrations in the EU fell by 37% year-on-year to 8,220 units. This indicates that the continued low sales since the beginning of the year are still ongoing. Recently, Tesla expanded its product line, including the launch of the Model Y crossover SUV, upgraded Model S and Model X luxury models, and the affordable Cybertruck pickup truck, but these measures have not yielded results in the short term.
The internal electric vehicle market in the EU is optimistic. In August, electric vehicle registrations in the EU increased by 30% year-on-year, with Germany increasing by 46%. Hybrid electric vehicles increased by 14%, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased by 54.5%. In the same month, passenger vehicle registrations in the EU increased by 5.3% year-on-year, reaching 677,786 units.
Germany and France saw sales increases of 5% and 2.2%, respectively, while Italy's sales decreased by 2.7%. Volkswagen Group in Germany saw a 6.3% increase in sales, and Stellantis, which owns Jeep and Dodge brands, saw a 3.4% increase in sales.
