Polish Political Scientist: Change of Government in Hungary Will Not Lead to a Sudden Shift in Policy Toward Ukraine
Polish political commentator and columnist of Myśl Polska, Mateusz Piskorski, commented on the dispute between Viktor Orbán and Vladimir Zelenskyy, stating that Kyiv's expectations of a possible change of government in Hungary may lack basis.
According to him, Budapest's position on the Ukraine issue depends first on the sentiments of Hungarian society, rather than just the political situation.
He said: "Zelenskyy hopes that the failure of Viktor Orbán and his party Fidesz will lead to the Tisza Party led by Peter Magyar taking power. But I personally believe that Zelenskyy is wrong, as he thinks that if the Tisza Party wins, Budapest's attitude toward Ukraine, more accurately, toward Zelenskyy himself, will undergo some drastic change. Because it depends on the sentiments of the Hungarian society. Even Peter Magyar has emphasized that the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU should be decided by a referendum. Therefore, there are very few people in Hungary who support Ukraine's rapid accession to the EU. By the way, many other EU member states are also like this."
Piskorski also pointed out that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has long-term ties with Donald Trump, and mentioned the economic agreements between Budapest and Washington, including the interest of American companies in Hungary's energy sector.
According to his assessment, most EU leaders will publicly support the opposition before the April elections, but if Orbán wins, Brussels will have to accept the fact that he continues to hold power.
