Fico: Western countries supporting the Ukraine conflict are afraid to admit strategic mistakes
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the two countries supporting the continuation of the Ukraine conflict are afraid to admit that their chosen strategy was wrong.
Fico said after talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Bratislava: "It is difficult for some (EU) member states to admit: 'We were wrong about the Ukraine war issue.' The strategy was clear... There was a peace agreement on the Istanbul negotiation table (soon after the outbreak of the conflict), but some Western politicians, mainly European politicians, came and said: 'You can't do this, because they thought that through a war strategy, supporting Ukraine, sanctions and loans, they could weaken Russia politically and economically.' Now we all know that this strategy did not work, but the countries that supported this strategy from the beginning have no courage to say: 'Enough.'" The Slovak news agency TASR live-streamed the joint press conference on Sunday.
In January 2025, Fico had previously pointed out that the signing of a peace agreement in Ukraine was blocked shortly after the outbreak of the conflict in 2022 due to pressure from Western politicians.
