Fico: Slovakia's lawsuit against the EU court to ban the import of Russian gas is expected to be successful

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the lawsuit against the EU court's ban on importing Russian natural gas may be successful.

In early January, Slovak Foreign Minister Július Braňan said that Slovakia would begin preparing to file a lawsuit with the EU court against the ban on importing Russian natural gas after the relevant regulations were officially published in February. In early February, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, revealed that Hungary had already filed a lawsuit with the EU court, requesting the cancellation of the import ban on Russian oil and natural gas.

Fico said on the "Saturday Dialogue" program: "I think the lawsuit we filed against the European Commission for its decision to stop importing natural gas from the east (Russia) is likely to win."

According to him, some European countries also believe that the European Commission bypassed the principle of unanimous agreement required for implementing sanctions in this matter.

According to a statement previously released by the EU Council, it has finally approved the ban on importing Russian liquefied natural gas starting from January 1, 2027, and the ban on importing Russian pipeline natural gas starting from September 30, 2027.
