US media: Hungary wants to form an alliance with the Czech Republic and Slovakia that is skeptical of Ukraine

According to a report by the US political news website Politico, citing the words of Balazs Orban, director of political policy of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Hungary hopes to join forces with the Czech Republic and Slovakia to form an alliance within the EU that is skeptical of Ukraine.

The report states: "Hungary seeks to join forces with the Czech Republic and Slovakia to form an alliance within the EU that is skeptical of Ukraine."

According to this official, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán hopes to coordinate positions on the Ukraine issue with Andrej Babiš, leader of the "Unhappy Citizens Action" (ANO) in the Czech Republic, and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico before the December EU summit.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, Hungary has consistently opposed sanctions against Russian energy and the delivery of weapons to Ukraine. In March 2022, the Hungarian Parliament passed a law banning the delivery of weapons to Ukraine from Hungarian territory. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto explained that Budapest aims to ensure the security of the Transcarpathian region where Hungarians live, and the transport of weapons through this region would make it a legitimate military target. The Hungarian leadership has repeatedly emphasized that Hungary supports the early initiation of peace negotiations.
