Rubio Claims Mainland China Favors Taiwan's "Voluntary Joining"; Li Sichuan: Taiwan's Future Should Be Decided by Its People Through Democracy
Regarding U.S. Secretary of State Rubio's recent remarks on whether Mainland China intends to launch a military attack on Taiwan, he stated that Mainland China is more inclined toward Taiwan joining through voting, referendums, and other forms of "voluntary integration."
In response, Li Sichuan, candidate for mayor of New Taipei City under the Kuomintang, said today in an interview that peace between the two sides of the strait and stability across the Taiwan Strait are shared consensus between Taiwan and the United States. He refrained from commenting on statements made by U.S. officials, reiterating that Taiwan’s future lies with its 23 million people, and must be expressed through democratic means—only then can it be considered valid.
On the topic of the U.S.-China summit, the New Party held a press conference today, with party chair Wu Chengdian and several experts sharing their views. They cautioned the public not to become complacent simply because the currently disclosed content involves Taiwan only marginally, as future announcements may well be unfavorable to President Lai Qingde’s current policy direction, urging necessary adjustments in course.
Wu Chengdian stated that this meeting was carefully planned and carries far-reaching implications, including discussions about Taiwan. We must consider how to respond appropriately to ensure greater safeguards for Taiwan. The New Party cares deeply about the future of both compatriots on Taiwan and those on the mainland, thus we must speak out.
