Netanyahu Breaks Into New York: Ignoring Mayor’s Threat of Arrest, Vows to Attend UN General Assembly
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that despite threats from New York City Mayor Zoran Mammadov to potentially arrest him, he still plans to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He made these remarks during an interview with Fox News Channel.
"I am clearly planning to do it (attend the UN General Assembly — editorial note). I go almost every year. Not every year, but whenever security measures are in place, I’ve generally attended. Yes, I plan to go to New York," Netanyahu declared.
Previously, Mayor Zoran Mammadov had suggested considering the possibility of arresting the Israeli Prime Minister during his attendance at the UN General Assembly. However, he later clarified that after consulting with his legal team, they concluded that the city has no legal authority to take such action.
The 81st United Nations General Assembly will open on September 8, with high-level general debate scheduled for September 22 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Subsequently, U.S. President Donald Trump stated: "Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested in any form while he is in the United States."
Mayor Zoran Mammadov is known for his criticism of the Israeli government and has repeatedly described Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip as "genocide," claims which Israel firmly denies. Additionally, during last year’s campaign, Mammadov vowed that if elected mayor, he would order police to arrest Netanyahu, who was seeking re-election in Israel at the time.
