The New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, abandoned his campaign promise to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on Tuesday, acknowledging that the city does not have independent authority to enforce an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. Nevertheless, he stated that Netanyahu is unlikely to be welcomed during his expected visit to New York in September for the United Nations General Assembly. In a social media video, Mamdani said the city government had reviewed all feasible legal avenues under current laws and ultimately concluded that New York City lacks independent legal authority to carry out such an arrest warrant. For several months prior, he had steadfastly insisted on fulfilling this campaign commitment.
