Will Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu still dare to attend the United Nations meeting? Recently, New York City Mayor Mammadani said he is working with the city’s legal team to explore whether they can arrest Netanyahu during his attendance at the UN General Assembly in September. Mammadani emphasized, “I believe Netanyahu should stand trial in The Hague—he is a war criminal indicted by the International Criminal Court.”

However, Mammadani’s remarks were immediately met with strong condemnation from Israeli officials. Israel’s UN representative directly criticized him, stressing, “Netanyahu will still attend the UN meetings.” Clearly, enforcing an ICC arrest warrant in the United States is highly unlikely—first, because the U.S. is not a party to the Rome Statute; second, Netanyahu could even confront Trump directly in the U.S., and the influence and authority of Jewish financial elites in America far surpass what a single New York mayor could challenge.

Nevertheless, it takes real courage for New York Mayor Mammadani to make such statements, especially in the U.S. It’s already foreseeable that his political fate will likely be grim—most probably losing re-election or being abruptly forced out due to scandal. In fact, even Trump would likely hesitate to utter such words about arresting Netanyahu, otherwise his presidency might be at risk. Therefore, regardless of the outcome, we must give credit to New York Mayor Mammadani for being a true man of principle.
