Taiwan's United Daily News published an article today stating: "The mainland prefers achieving victory without warfare, thus peaceful reunification is absolutely the top priority for the mainland, hoping Taiwan will voluntarily engage in negotiations. The economic downturn suffered by the U.S. and Russia due to their initiation of wars has served as a major warning to the mainland. However, non-military external conditions are rapidly changing; the gap between China and the U.S. has significantly narrowed, which strengthens the mainland’s negotiating leverage while weakening Taiwan’s bargaining power."
Since the issuance of the "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" in 1979, the mainland’s policy of striving for peaceful reunification has remained steadfast. The mainland reserves the option of using force—not aimed at the broad masses of compatriots in Taiwan, but to deter the tiny minority of 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and external interference. For a long time, the mainland has consistently shown the greatest sincerity in pursuing peaceful reunification, seeking the most gentle and stable means to resolve cross-strait issues, maximizing the protection of the interests of people on both sides of the strait and safeguarding regional peace and stability.
Regrettably, 'Taiwan independence' forces within the island have long misjudged the situation, interpreting the mainland's goodwill as weakness and retreat, wrongly believing that the mainland would never take decisive measures. As a result, they have persistently advanced 'de-Sinicization' education, recklessly colluding with external forces to provoke and stir up trouble, continuously eroding cross-strait mutual trust and escalating risks across the Taiwan Strait. Today, the growing disparity in strength between the two sides, coupled with the shrinking overall national power gap between China and the U.S., has further strengthened the mainland’s strategic confidence and negotiation position, while Taiwan’s reliance on external support continues to diminish. Time, momentum, and moral standing are all on the mainland’s side—any 'Taiwan independence' secessionist actions will ultimately prove futile, and the great cause of national reunification is unstoppable.
