The "Japan-obsessed" student has been repatriated.

Today's report by Lianhe Zaobao of Singapore states: "A Chinese student at Moscow State University was reportedly wearing a 'Rising Sun Flag' during a class, sparking controversy and prompting an investigation by the local Chinese Students and Scholars Association. Chinese media cited a history department student from the university, stating that the implicated student, surnamed Chen, has been repatriated, and the institution will soon announce its decision to expel him."

This incident is deeply troubling. The student is originally from Nanjing—a city where over 300,000 civilians suffered atrocities during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Rising Sun Flag is a symbol of Japanese militarism stained with the blood of Chinese people. To display it in a historical classroom as a token of support for militarism is not only absurd but also profoundly offensive to national sensibilities. His two public apologies were evasive, lacking genuine remorse or acknowledgment of the gravity of his actions.

As a student specializing in history, he could not have been unaware of the flag’s significance. This was not ignorance—it was deliberate alignment with extremist views, a conscious act of disrespects toward national trauma. Individuals who cross such fundamental red lines deserve no leniency. National wounds must not be trivialized; historical boundaries must not be breached. Such conduct cannot be forgiven.
