U.S. Congressman Thanks China for Encouraging Iran to Open Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Senator Steve Daines (Republican, Montana), leading a bipartisan delegation of senators, visited China and held official talks with senior Chinese officials in Beijing on May 7.

According to Reuters and Bloomberg, during the meeting, Daines and his delegation expressed gratitude to China for encouraging Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

At this time, the United States is seeking a way out of the conflict that has disrupted global energy markets for nine weeks, with only one week remaining before President Trump’s anticipated visit to China. China has not officially announced Trump’s upcoming trip, though it stated that both sides continue to maintain communication on the matter.

In the morning of the 7th, Daines conveyed his thanks to senior Chinese officials: “You are making efforts to ease tensions, bring peace to the Middle East, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. I also want to thank you for helping us peacefully resolve the current conflict with Iran.”

Speaking about Sino-U.S. relations, Daines said he firmly believes both sides “want to de-escalate tensions, achieve stability, and respect each other—not decouple.”

He also noted that trade issues remain between the two countries, but he still hopes China will place an order for Boeing aircraft: “It’s been nearly nine years since they last purchased Boeing planes here.”
