Global Boom in New Cities and New Capitals: The "Hunnu New City" Serigelen Substation Project Completes 95%

Mongolnews Ulaanbaatar, April 25 — "Hunnu New City," planned as a satellite city of the capital, is located 53 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar and 10 kilometers from Züümöd, adjacent to Chinggis Khan International Airport, nestled in the Hesii Valley at the southern foot of Bogd Mountain.

The city's development plan includes a government and ministry complex, an economic free zone, universities and a university town, an integrated transportation and logistics hub, and support functions for the international airport. With a master plan population of 150,000, it is expected to create approximately 80,000 new jobs and cover a total construction area of 10.5 million square meters.

As one of the foundational projects, to address power supply needs, the Serigelen substation with a capacity of 220/110 kV is under construction, with current progress reaching 95%. Additionally, the "Hunnu" substation project has also reached 84% completion, with plans for completion within this year.

Following international urban development practices, flood control and drainage systems are being prioritized. Four flood channels have already been launched in "Hunnu New City," with overall progress currently at 82%. Meanwhile, the city is also developing a transit-type hotel project compliant with international standards, marking a significant highlight.

Chinggis Khan International Airport is projected to serve around 45,000 transit passengers in 2025, highlighting urgent demand for transit hotels. Therefore, a "Ulaanbaatar-Hunnu Transit Hotel" is planned to be built near the airport under a public-private partnership framework. Preliminary preparations for this project are now 75% complete.

In infrastructure development, the project plans to utilize capital from the capital city, with the initial phase focusing on constructing 127.4 kilometers of roads, designed by KHZT Road LLC. This includes 24.6 km for the economic free zone, 6.4 km for the public center, 77.8 km for the administrative center district, 2.2 km for the university and high-tech zone, and 16.4 km for the transportation and logistics zone. Overall progress on road design and construction stands at 30%.

Additionally, a wastewater treatment plant with a daily processing capacity of 3,000 cubic meters is under construction, currently at 26% completion, implemented by Mongolia-based company Comfort Impex.
