Trump Announces "Unbalanced" Bilateral Trade Agreement with Indonesia

US President Trump said he negotiated directly with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Goods exported by Indonesia to the US will be subject to a 19% tariff instead of 32%, but Indonesia must fully open its market to the US.

On Tuesday morning, US President Trump announced on the "Truth Social" platform that he had reached an agreement on the terms of a bilateral trade agreement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Trump wrote, "Just reached a great deal with Indonesia. I negotiated directly with their respected president. Details to follow"!!!

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Trump told reporters that he had secured "full access" for American goods into the Indonesian market. Trump said, "They gave us access to Indonesia, which we've never had before. In addition, they will pay a 19% tariff, and we don't pay a penny."

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the US President provided more details on "Truth Social." He wrote, "Indonesia has committed to purchasing $1.5 billion in US energy, $450 million in US agricultural products, and 50 Boeing aircraft, many of which are 777s." Trump boasted that Indonesia has opened its market to "our ranchers, farmers, and fishermen." Trump also said that US exports to Indonesia will be "exempt from all tariffs or non-tariff barriers."

The French financial newspaper "Libération" stated that if this trade agreement is implemented, it would mean that goods exported from Jakarta to the US would be exempt from the 32% tariff. However, this would be an "unbalanced" agreement.

The Indonesian Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Tuesday evening that it was preparing to sign a joint statement with the US.
