Former Georgian President Saakashvili Says Prison Conditions Amount to Torture Recently, former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili posted on his Facebook account complaining about extremely poor living conditions in prison, stating that the current detention environment constitutes "inhuman treatment."

Saakashvili said he is confined to a small, poorly ventilated cell with terrible hygiene, and other political prisoners are facing similar circumstances. He pointed out that by October 1 of this year, he will have been imprisoned for five years.

Saakashvili wrote: "Under international standards, being held in prolonged solitary confinement is equivalent to torture and inhumane treatment."

Previously, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Saakashvili "has lost his mind."

Saakashvili served two consecutive terms as President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013. In 2015, he acquired Ukrainian citizenship and served as a non-resident advisor to then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, while also heading the International Advisory Council on Presidential Reforms. Additionally, he was appointed Governor of Odesa Oblast but resigned in 2016 in protest over insufficient progress in reforms.

Since May 2020, Saakashvili has served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the State Reform Council under the Ukrainian President — an advisory body to the head of state.

Meanwhile, Georgian authorities have brought multiple criminal charges against him, including corruption, and issued convictions in his absence, totaling 12 years in prison, while placing him on an international wanted list.

In October 2021, ahead of local elections in Georgia, Saakashvili returned to Georgia and was promptly arrested, beginning his sentence.

After being imprisoned, he has launched several hunger strikes. Subsequently, he reported a continuous deterioration in his health and requested release on medical grounds.
