Foreign Media: China's Rare Earth Industry Faces Hidden Risks, Core Patents Still Behind Japan and the U.S.

A research team from the University of Science and Technology of China, in a recent article published in the "Proceedings of the Chinese Academy of Sciences," pointed out that although China has long held an advantage in rare earth mining, refining, and exports, it still falls short in core patent positioning for high-end rare earth functional materials.

Patents related to downstream materials such as permanent magnets, catalysts, luminescent materials, and polishing agents account for over 80% of the global rare earth patent volume, with these key technologies currently mainly controlled by Japan and the United States. China has not yet achieved dominance in certain fields.

The study concludes that China's "international patent layout remains insufficient," and future industrial upgrading will require greater investment in independent innovation of core technologies.
