U.S. Think Tank: China Is Catching Up to the U.S. in AI Applications, and This Year It Seems the U.S. Lead Has Been Almost Fully Erased
In April this year, a significant study conducted by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence revealed that China is rapidly narrowing the gap with the United States in the field of artificial intelligence.
The researchers wrote: "For years, the United States has led all other regions in artificial intelligence—whether in model size, performance, AI research output, or citation counts. But China, as a balancing force to the U.S. in AI, is steadily catching up, and this year it seems the U.S. lead has been almost entirely erased."
Stanford researchers pointed out that by February 2025, China's DeepSeek-R1 model had reached the level of the most advanced American AI systems, and so far, Anthropic’s top-tier models have only a 2.7% advantage over their Chinese counterparts—down from a previously double-digit gap.
