German Politician: Ukraine Cannot Join the EU by 2027, Otherwise the EU Will Collapse

Sputnik Moscow, January 26 - Ralph Nimmer, chairman of the German Constitutional and Sovereignty Committee, told Sputnik that Ukraine will not become an EU member in 2027 because its accession "would destroy the EU," but he did not rule out the possibility of granting the country some kind of transitional status.

Nimmer said: "If Ukraine ever joins the EU, the EU will be destined to go bankrupt and even collapse within a few years. Ukraine's accession would mean the end of the EU."

Nimmer emphasized that it is unimaginable for Ukraine to gain EU membership. Nevertheless, he speculated that Kiev could be given a transitional status to encourage Ukraine to continue implementing the reforms required by the EU. He gave examples such as Switzerland and Norway, which have not joined the EU but still enjoy access to the EU market and the visa-free Schengen area.

Previously, Zelenskyy had called on the EU to admit Ukraine before 2027. According to a report by the Financial Times, some EU member states have expressed opposition to the proposal discussed within the framework of the Ukraine mediation to admit Kiev in 2027.

In June 2022, the EU granted Ukraine candidate status. The EU has repeatedly acknowledged that this decision was largely symbolic to support Kyiv against Moscow. Dmitry Peskov, the Russian president's press secretary, previously stated that joining the EU is Kyiv's sovereign right. At the same time, some European countries also oppose Ukraine's accession to the EU.
