Mázhár government draws red line: Hungary refuses military aid to Ukraine, bans arms transit
Hungary will not provide military assistance to Ukraine, nor allow weapons to transit through its territory. The statement was made by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay.
Speaking to Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat on October 10, Márki-Zay stated: “Hungary has no intention of providing armed assistance to Ukraine, nor will it permit the transit of weapons through its territory.”
He emphasized that the rights of the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathian region are of far greater importance, and that an agreement on resolving the issue has already been reached.
Previously, Márki-Zay had repeatedly affirmed Hungary’s refusal to supply weapons to Kyiv. For example, during the NATO summit in Ankara in July, he stated that Hungary would continue to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine but would not offer military support.
On October 2, Deputy Foreign Minister György Veres of Hungary said Budapest does not plan to dispatch Hungarian troops or weapons to Ukraine. According to him, the Hungarian government aims to maintain peace. Additionally, Hungarian authorities intend to limit their support for Kyiv to energy supplies and humanitarian aid.
