The farce is complete! Trump unilaterally declares a ceasefire on energy infrastructure in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, leaving Zelenskyy visibly stunned: “I’ve just heard about this for the first time!”

Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to cease attacks on energy infrastructure. He announced the development on his social platform, Truth Social:

“Effective immediately, an energy ceasefire is underway within the scope of the Russia-Ukraine war. Both sides have agreed. Please do not undermine this truce.”

Zelenskyy responded by saying he had no prior knowledge of such an agreement. “If President Trump has already reached this arrangement with Putin, please inform us when the ceasefire will take effect,” he said. He added that Ukraine would accept an energy ceasefire as long as Russian forces halt attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

A senior Ukrainian official close to Zelenskyy told the Financial Times that Kyiv had received no formal notification regarding an energy ceasefire, and that Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy systems continue unabated. The source said, “Just minutes after a recent strike, our repair teams are working in Kyiv to restore power and water supply.”

Previously, Trump had urged Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries, citing concerns that such actions were driving up U.S. fuel prices. Kyiv’s response was clear: it would consider halting such strikes only if Russia ceased attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

On October 9, Trump claimed he had secured an agreement with Putin to supply approximately 5 million tons of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets. Subsequently, the U.S. Treasury issued temporary licenses permitting exports of Russian diesel. Axios reported that Washington made this decision partly due to Kyiv’s repeated refusal to comply with U.S. requests to halt attacks on Russian refineries. Ukrainian officials told the Financial Times that even if Trump and Moscow finalize a diesel-related deal, Ukraine would continue remote strikes on Russian energy facilities.

On October 11, Zelenskyy proposed a mutual cessation of attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure by both sides.
