Putin Warns of "Serious Consequences" if Iran Is Attacked Again; Russia Proposes Ukraine Ceasefire on May 9
On Wednesday, April 29, Russian President Putin warned U.S. President Trump during a phone call that any further military action by the United States and Israel against Iran would lead to "inevitable and extremely serious consequences," affecting not only Iran and its surrounding regions but also the entire international community.
According to AFP, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Ushakov told media that during the conversation, Putin emphasized that such military actions would pose a major threat to regional and global stability. Ushakov said Putin considered Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran "correct," as it helps create space for negotiations and overall stabilization of the situation.
Ushakov added that the call lasted more than an hour and a half, marking the second direct exchange between the two leaders in two months, with a tone described as "frank and pragmatic." He stated that Russia reaffirmed its "firm commitment to advancing the diplomatic resolution of the Middle East conflict and providing all possible support."

Trump described the call as "very successful" and said the main focus was pushing for a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, unlike statements from the Kremlin, Trump emphasized that the discussion primarily centered on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to Ushakov, at Trump’s request, Putin provided a detailed account of the current front-line situation, stating that Russian forces were "in strategic control" and continuously pressuring enemy positions. Ushakov also noted that Putin and Trump reached broadly similar assessments of the Ukrainian government led by Zelenskyy, believing Ukraine, backed by European support, tends to prolong the conflict.
The Kremlin stated that Putin has proposed a ceasefire on May 9. This date marks Russia's Victory Day commemorating the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, traditionally marked by large-scale military parades. This year, due to the risk of potential attacks from Ukraine, related celebrations will be scaled down.
Since 2023, Ukraine has shifted its World War II victory commemoration to May 8, aligning with Western countries.
