Russian forces launched a surprise missile strike on Kyiv late at night, in retaliation for the attack on a school in Luhansk.

At around 5:24 a.m. on May 24, Kyiv suffered a large-scale ballistic missile attack, with missile debris falling in two areas of the city, according to information released by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Currently, Russian attack drones continue to arrive, and the threat from ballistic missiles has not been lifted. Authorities are urging residents to remain in air-raid shelters for safety. The number of casualties and extent of property damage are still being assessed and verified.

Ukrainian intelligence agencies revealed in late 2025 that Russia planned to mass-produce and upgrade missiles, even considering equipping them with nuclear warheads. A week ago, Putin reiterated his nuclear deterrence stance, publicly mentioning the "Hazelnut" missile and claiming this weapon could carry a nuclear warhead.

Just prior to this attack, a dormitory at a college in the old town of Severodonetsk in Luhansk was struck, resulting in 11 deaths and 41 injuries. Russia then ordered a retaliatory response.
