The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) of Nepal said on Tuesday afternoon that the death toll has risen to 1,003. The country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that nearly 4,000 people are still missing, including approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries. Around 11,800 people have already been rescued.
As authorities attempt to deliver relief supplies to survivors, rescue teams are racing against time to locate hundreds of people trapped in 12 to 13 tunnels along the Trishuli River, part of numerous hydropower projects.
The National Disaster Risk Management Authority has listed 639 individuals associated with hydropower projects as missing. However, officials are still unable to determine how many may be trapped inside the tunnels or whether they have been swept away by flash floods.
At the Upal Tishuli-3A Hydropower Project, rescue teams located the tunnel entrance on Monday and began drilling. They continue to ventilate and drain water inside the tunnel to enable entry. According to a report by The Kathmandu Post, excavators and crushers are clearing the passage toward a 4-kilometer-long tunnel, believed to house 30 to 40 people inside an underground power plant.
