Nepal Considering Allowing Chinese Robot to Climb Mount Everest

According to the Kathmandu Post, citing information from Nepal's Department of Tourism, authorities are considering approving China's humanoid robot, Unitree G1, to climb Mount Everest. The robot could lay the groundwork for using robotic systems to clean up garbage on Everest and monitor glacial conditions.

The U.S.-based nonprofit organization Geologic Dome, in collaboration with Nepal’s Fourteen Peaks Expedition company, has proposed sending a humanoid robot to Everest during the spring climbing season of 2026. The team has already applied to Nepalese authorities for permission to use the Unitree G1 robot during a 52-day research expedition in the Everest region.

Shimar Hota, Director of Nepal’s Department of Tourism, said, “After receiving the proposal, we consulted with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. The ministry has requested relevant departments to develop a plan considering risks, fee structures, and other issues. Once the main guidelines are established, permits will be issued.”

The project aims to test whether robots can ultimately assist in cleaning up Everest’s waste, monitoring glaciers, and supporting high-risk mountaineering operations. However, a current obstacle is that Nepal lacks a legal framework for non-human climbers. As a result, if approved, this expedition could not take place before autumn or winter 2026 at the earliest.
