"It's nothing short of suicide": Fico comments on the EU ban on Russian energy

Moscow, January 28 -- TASS

According to a statement from the Slovak government, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the Ukraine conflict could end before November 2027.

Fico pointed out during a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Júra Braňan that the EU's decision to completely ban the import of Russian natural gas starting from November 1, 2027, is foolish.

He said: "I hope by then the war will have ended and we will have regained some common sense. Because refusing Russian energy is nothing short of suicide — not only do I think so, but other European politicians also share this view."

Fico emphasized that Slovakia has opposed the stoppage of Russian natural gas imports from the beginning and warned that Europe would face a natural gas shortage.

A statement released by the EU Council on Monday showed that it has finally approved a ban on importing Russian liquefied natural gas starting from January 1, 2027, and a ban on importing Russian pipeline natural gas starting from September 30, 2027.
