Chinese enterprises will construct Mongolia's first 80-centimeter heavy-load highway

Mongolian News Agency, Ulaanbaatar, May 25 — The groundbreaking ceremony for the 435.6-kilometer heavy-load dedicated highway connecting Choyr City in Gobi-Sumbe County to Zamyn-Üd Border Crossing in Eastern Gobi Province was held on May 17 in Gobi-Sumbe County. This project serves as a crucial transportation corridor for Mongolia’s import and export activities. The project’s co-investment partner, "Zhonglushun Construction Investment LLC" from China, won the bid through a public tender and has officially initiated construction under commission from "Mongolia Dedicated Highways Company Ltd." The construction contractor is the Chinese state-owned enterprise "China Construction Sixth Engineering Division Co., Ltd."

Currently, at the construction site of the two-way, two-lane heavy-load highway project linking Hesig Valley Basin, Choyr, and Zamyn-Üd, machinery for earthwork and road construction has been progressively delivered.

According to Resolution No. 355 issued by the Mongolian Government on September 26, 2023, the implementation of the two-way, two-lane heavy-load dedicated highway project connecting Hesig Valley Basin, Choyr, and Zamyn-Üd was approved. Subsequently, under Resolution No. 233 dated 2025, it was decided to advance the project via a public-private partnership model. Under this framework, the Ministry of Transportation of Mongolia launched a two-phase bidding process, culminating in the selection of "Zhonglushun Construction Investment LLC" from China as the winning bidder. Both parties formally signed the construction and operation agreement for the heavy-load dedicated highway on February 13, 2026.
