Key Minerals of Mongolia: Mongolia and South Korea to Collaborate in Mineral Resources Sector

Mongolnews, Ulaanbaatar, May 20 — On the 20th of this month, Minister Gonchigdamba Damdinsüren of Industry and Mineral Resources met with Mr. Pan Song-bo (translated name), Head of the Representative Office of the Korea Mining Restoration and Development Corporation in Mongolia.

Minister Gonchigdamba Damdinsüren emphasized, "The Mongolian government is preparing to submit a revised draft of the Mineral Resources Law to the State Great Khural. With the passage of this bill, it will create favorable opportunities for extensive cooperation with investors in the mineral resources and mining sectors."

Mr. Pan Song-bo stated that preparations are underway for the implementation status report and council meeting of the "Mongolia-South Korea Joint Rare Metals Research Center" scheduled for October. He noted that their institution focuses on short-term training and exchange programs for experts and researchers, information sharing, and skill enhancement in collaboration with Mongolia’s Ministry of Mines and Petroleum. He also mentioned that although 54 projects have already been implemented in Mongolia’s mining sector, there remains a need to develop demonstration-level cooperative projects between the two countries in the mineral resources field.

Minister Gonchigdamba Damdinsüren expressed satisfaction with the operation of the "Mongolia-South Korea Joint Rare Metals Research Center," and hopes to expand cooperation in areas such as mine closure, ecological restoration, student training, scholarship programs, and social research, while increasing the number of projects and initiatives. Additionally, he expressed willingness to hold a meeting of the Mongolia-South Korea Joint Rare Metals Committee in the near future and invited the South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy to attend the "Mining Week 2026" event.
