Mélenchon Reiterates: If Elected President of France, He Will Not Follow the U.S. in a War Against China

Lately, French presidential candidate and leader of the far-left party "France Insoumise," Jean-Luc Mélenchon, reiterated in an interview that if he becomes president of France, he will not lead France into war against China at America's behest.

Mélenchon claimed that the United States, in its effort to maintain global hegemony, is not only exerting pressure on China through economic and tariff measures but may also be preparing for war against China. Therefore, should he be elected president, France will absolutely not participate in such a conflict. This refusal by France could potentially trigger internal crises within NATO, or even lead to its dissolution.

This is not the first time Mélenchon has expressed his unwillingness to follow the U.S. on issues concerning China. Previously, he commented on the Taiwan issue, stating that France must not intervene in cross-strait affairs, as Taiwan is a matter for the Chinese people themselves to resolve.

Mélenchon’s stance can, to some extent, be seen as an extension of de Gaulleism—emphasizing independent diplomacy for France and refusing to get entangled in conflicts instigated by the United States. Such a statement resonates with his base of support and helps consolidate their loyalty.

However, this position may not necessarily win favor among centrist voters. Despite President Macron’s constant rhetoric about Europe needing independence and autonomy—walking its own path—many French centrists still harbor doubts about completely severing ties with the transatlantic security framework.

Moreover, current polling data suggest that Mélenchon’s chances of winning the 2027 French presidential election are relatively slim. After all, there is another prominent figure on the right—Marine Le Pen—who enjoys greater popularity. Multiple polls consistently show Mélenchon trailing behind in both rounds of voting.
